With the revival of Verdi's Otello this week, the COC welcomes back American tenor Clifton Forbis, who was last seen as Siegmund in the COC Ring Cycle in 2006.  Forbis made his COC debut in 1995 as - would you believe - Lensky in Eugene Onegin!  Even in such a lyric tenor role, it was clear that his voice was more substantial than the typical Lensky. Three years later, he returned as Florestan in Fidelio.  Forbis has seen become a world renowned heldentenor, in demand in all the major houses as Siegmund, Samson, Otello and Tristan. His baritonal timbre is very much in evidence in the video clip I have selected - a concert performance of Die Wallkure Act One at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 2008.  His Sieglinde is the great Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek. I saw her the last few years as a wonderful Jenufa, Chrysothemis, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, as well as a fabulous Sieglinde. These two burned up the stage here, despite it being just a concert performance. Bernard Haitink conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

La Canadian Opera Company (COC) remet en scène l’opéra Otello de Verdi cette saison, avec le ténor américain Clifton Forbis, qui était Siegmund en 2006, lorsque la compagnie avait monté le Ring. En fait, M. Forbis avait fait ses débuts dans cette maison en 1995 dans le rôle de nul autre que Lensky, dans Eugène Onéguine! Mais dans ce rôle si lyrique, on percevait déjà la puissance dramatique de sa voix. Trois ans après, il était Florestan dans Fidelio. M. Forbis est vite devenu un Heldentenor de renommée internationale, et il a foulé toutes les grandes scènes du monde dans les rôles de Siegmund, Samson, Otello et Tristan. Son timbre barytonnant est évident dans ce vidéoclip, qui montre 1^er acte de Die Walküre en concert au Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, en 2008. À ses côtés, Sieglinde est la grande soprano hollandaise Eva-Maria Westbroek. Ces dernières années, elle a merveilleusement incarné Jenufa, Chrysothémis, Lady Macbeth du district de Mtsensk, et une fabuleuse Sieglinde. Ces deux artistes chantent avec fougue, malgré l’absence de costumes et de décors. Bernard Haitink dirige l’Orchestre royal du Concertgebouw.
