When it was announced that conductor Daniel Barenboim had chosen the 25 year old Georgia mezzo Anita Rachvelishvili to sing the title role of Bizet's Carmen to open the 2009-10 La Scala season, there was widespread skepticism. Surely choosing someone with virtually no stage experience for such a high profile gig was a major gamble?  Given the huge resources - not to speak of the prestige - of the august La Scala, surely any mezzo would jump at the chance to take on the gypsy?  Well, the opening night on December 7 was shown on Italian TV and simulcast to selected cinemas worldwide.  What is a La Scala opening without a scandale? So the infamous La Scala loggionisti lustily booed stage director/Barenboim protege Emma Dante. There were even a smattering of boos for the Erwin Schrott (Escamillo) and Adriana Damato (Micaela). But for Anita Rachvelishvili, there were only cheers, and the international press was generous in its praise of her singing and acting, but particularly for her poise under the incredible pressure. Quand on a annoncé que le chef d’orchestre Daniel Barenboim avait choisi Anita Rachvelishvili, une mezzo géorgienne de 25 ans, pour chanter le rôle-titre de Carmen à l’ouverture de la saison 2009-2010 de la Scala, bien des gens ont hoché la tête. Pourquoi prendre un tel risque en choisissant une cantatrice si inexpérimentée pour une production aussi prestigieuse? Compte tenu des ressources et du prestige immenses dont jouit la vénérable Scala, n’importe quelle mezzo aurait sauté sur l’occasion, n’est-ce pas? La soirée inaugurale du 7 décembre a été diffusée à la télévision italienne et sur les écrans de plusieurs cinémas dans le monde. Et que serait une ouverture à la Scala sans un charivari? Par conséquent, les loggionisti notoires de la Scala ont copieusement hué la metteuse en scène et protégée de Barenboim, Emma Dante. Ils ont même un peu hué Erwin Schrott (Escamillo) et Adriana Damato (Micaela). Mais Anita Rachvelishvili? Des ovations! La presse internationale a loué sa performance et surtout sa prestance face à tant de pression. On trouvera de longs extraits de cette représentation sur YouTube.
